Hemp Protein- A Great Source of Plant-Based Protein

June 07, 2016

Hemp has been grown for decades and has a variety of uses. It is similar to sunflower seeds because of its hard outside shell that surrounds an internal nut. It is this nut or heart that may be consumed raw or pressed into hemp oil. Hemp protein powder is what remains after the seeds are pressed into oil. This powder is an excellent source of plant-based protein that provides 50% protein. That is almost double what is found in meat.

Hemp protein is packed with nutritional benefits. This low carbohydrate super food is an excellent source of plant-based protein, dietary fibre, omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, and various other vitamins and minerals. These seeds are easily digested and packed with amino acids that are involved in protein synthesis. It is a great option as an alternative to whey protein products used pre and post exercise.

Hemp protein has a subtle nut flavour and may be incorporated into hot and cold beverages. Used as a recovery post exercise, it may be blended in a smoothie, or added to almond milk in a shaker bottle.
