Stress and Adrenal Health

September 06, 2016

It seems like today we experience stress in a variety of different ways and situations. Examples such as a poor diet, too much or little exercise, infections, lack of sleep, no relaxation, financial, and emotional stress can have great impacts on our bodies and how we feel.

In response to stress, our two adrenal glands, which sit on top of our kidneys, secrete a variety of hormones, one of which is cortisol. Cortisol has the ability to affect mood, suppress our immune system, increase blood sugar, and increase blood pressure. Furthermore, under periods of prolonged stress, our adrenal glands can run out of resources to mount a response and recover. This is commonly referred to as adrenal fatigue. The telltale symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:

  • Tired despite adequate sleep
  • Difficulty waking in the morning
  • Salt cravings
  • Decreased energy
  • Lowered libido
  • Longer time to recovery from illness
  • Foggy thinking
  • Energy crash mid afternoon
  • Increased irritability
  • Memory loss

Fortunately there are a variety of things we can do to address stress and adrenal health. One of the simplest ways is through targeted supplementation. B-Complex vitamins such as B1, B2, B5, B6 and B12 are all required in our adrenal system. Specifically Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid). It is considered one of the more important B-vitamins for adrenal systems as it helps to produce energy and aids in making adrenal hormones.

Some other key vitamins and minerals for our adrenal system include magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
